Backpacking for Beginners Tips

One of the most fun excursions one can have in the great outdoors is to engage in backpacking overland tours. These backpacking adventures open the doors of opportunity to engage in a fun, active hobby that allows a person to feel close to the wilderness while also taking part in an exercise program that can improve their health. However, there is more to this hobbyist pursuit than merely selecting a backpack at random and heading out on the trails. For beginners, there needs to be a clear understanding of a few simple tips that can help many overland tours much more fun and exciting. Here is a brief look at some of those tips:

The first step is to completely familiarize yourself with what backpacking is all about. That means you need to read up on the subject and study the various basic facets of the activity. Thankfully, there are a number of excellent books on the subject and reading what they have to offer will certainly help raise such familiarity. Additionally, it would not be a bad idea to read up on the basics of first aid since such knowledge can prove life saving under certain circumstances.

It also would certainly not hurt to enroll in a formal class on backpacking. There are many instructors who offer training and introductory courses on this particular subject. These courses are of critical importance because they help infuse a beginner with the much needed skill for engaging in backpacking safely. It is never a good idea to “wing it” when taking part in an active hobby. Enrolling in a quality introduction to backpacking classes will certainly help make your travels a lot more fun and exciting.

Since backpacking is a physical activity, it never hurts to get into good shape prior to taking part in any overland tours. Gassing out or feeling fatigue can greatly hamper your ability to have fun on such a trip. So, engaging in a solid exercise program prior to going on any backpacking tours is highly recommended.

If you lack experience in backpacking, it may be best not to go it alone when you head out in the woods. This could prove quite problematic to say the least if you run into any trouble. As such, it is advisable to stick with group ventures and guided tours as these will deliver the results in a much safer fashion. Additionally, such tours will be better planned since they will be chaperoned by experienced guides who know how to make the most out of such a trip.

And, of course, a helping of common sense never hurt anyone who went out on a backpacking excursion. This means it is necessary to know your limitations and avoid any risky ventures that are outside of your skill and experience level. When you do this, you will discover your backpacking adventures to be a lot more fun and rewarding. So, use your head and stay safe when you backpack. It will be best for all involved.
