our

Story

Drifters started its journey in 1983, when trailblazer Andy Dot turned his passion for hiking and nature into something bigger. What began as off-the-grid trails and wild camping missions across South Africa -VW Combi, campfire stories and all – our tours quickly took off.

By 1990, we’d grown from a one-man show to a small team of passionate guides, each bringing their love for Africa’s raw beauty and wild spaces. That’s when the road opened up for us—beyond South Africa into Zimbabwe, Namibia, and Botswana. We travelled in old army trucks, camped under the stars, and lived by the motto: roughing it and loving it.

As South Africa entered a new era, so did we. Travellers from all over the world were looking for authentic African experiences, and we were ready.

With time came change – more travellers, more styles, more ways to experience this continent. So, we adapted, offering more comfort where it was wanted while keeping the adventure where it belonged.

Today, Drifters is still the go-to for travellers who want more than a holiday. We offer journeys that dig deeper, go further, and stay with you long after the dust settles.

Meet the Team

Caring for the environment isn’t just a commitment—it’s who we are. Drifters has championed conservation for over 40 years, leading the way in environmental tourism practices. We can take you to places where we took your parents 20-30 years ago, and you can’t see any impact of man or tourism on the area. That is a living example of environmentally friendly tourism.

Sustainability is woven into everything we do. From preserving natural habitats to supporting local initiatives, we actively safeguard Africa’s resources. This commitment isn’t just a policy—it’s a way of life, shaping our operations and inspiring every journey we take.

Our

Responsibility

As a proudly Southern African company, we invest where it matters most—on the ground. Drifters are registered in every country we operate in, directly employing local people and ensuring that a portion of every tour fee flows back into the communities we visit. We’re accredited members of leading tourism authorities, assuring our travellers of responsible, ethical, and sustainable travel across the continent.
